Daniel & Martha Davey Foundation: Chaplaincy Scholarship (MDiv)

The Daniel & Martha Davey Foundation is dedicated to supporting the training of the next generation of theologically sound military chaplains. Its generous donors have made it possible to offer a limited number of scholarships, which can cover the full cost of tuition and fees for students who plan to enter the chaplaincy after graduation.

Students and prospective students pursuing military chaplaincy will be considered for this scholarship upon receiving written approval from the Aaron & Hur society (see qualifications below for more details). They must also enroll as full-time resident, Master of Divinity students during a given academic year. This scholarship covers all tuition and fees for recipients during their course of study. All recipients will be required to serve one year as military chaplains for each year they receive the scholarship. Students receiving the award will also need to make periodic blog posts in order to keep donors updated on their progress and experience.

Selection Criteria - Applicants must:
  • Articulate their commitment to Jesus Christ
  • Satisfy all criteria for admission to the seminary
  • Provide evidence of an accredited undergraduate degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 for new, in-coming students
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA at VBTS if a current student
  • Enroll full-time: At least 9 credit hours in the fall and spring (and 6 credit hours during the summer)
  • Articulate intention to complete the degree and enter a military chaplaincy ministry within 10 years of graduation (one year of service for each year awarded)
  • Agree to maintain a blog (set up by the Davey foundation) to keep donors apprised of the student's progress and seminary experience
  • Provide evidence of integrity, humility, and overall Christian character suitable for the ministry as expressed in 1 Timothy 3
  • Written nomination from the Aaron & Hur Society* (applicant information will be sent to A&H Society after it is received)

In substantiation of the above criteria, students must submit a 500-word statement outlining:

  • Their commitment to Jesus Christ
  • Their intention to maintain full-time, on-campus enrollment for the duration of the MDiv
  • Their post-graduation military chaplaincy plans for their MDiv

About the Aaron & Hur Society: The Aaron & Hur Society, sponsored by the Daniel & Martha Davey Foundation, bridges a critical gap in chaplain leadership by providing full-time scholarships to highly qualified candidates training for active-duty roles. These investments equip evangelical military chaplains to deliver mission-critical spiritual support to U.S. service members facing crisis, moral injury, and combat stress.

Inspired by Exodus 17—where Aaron and Hur upheld Moses' hands to secure victory—the Society empowers chaplains to "hold up the hands" of those who defend our nation, strengthening their spiritual resilience when it matters most.
