Exposition of Leviticus

This course helps the student interpret the book of Leviticus according to the authorial intent. We examine the book’s literary argument, structure, genre, and other grammatical and rhetorical features, as well as the ancient Near Eastern setting. We will consider the Mosaic law in light of the old covenant and progressive revelation. (3 credit hours)

As a result of taking this class, students will be able to

  • interpret the book of Leviticus according to the authorial intent
  • articulate the author’s argument in Leviticus by reading the entire book multiple times
  • evaluate proposals regarding the book’s literary structure
  • identify basic grammatical and literary components, such as genre, allusions, inclusios, idioms, and conditional sentences, with the assistance of appropriate resources
  • explain the value of ancient Near Eastern background studies for the interpretation of Leviticus
  • resolve interpretive difficulties with increased skill
  • correlate Leviticus with biblical and systematic theology
  • understand the role of the Mosaic law in the church today

Dr. Mark Hassler is the Associate Professor of Old Testament at Virginia Beach Theological Seminary. Dr. Hassler also serves as Director of Publications and Field Archaeologist for the Shiloh excavations in Israel. He was the editor of the Near East Archaeological Society Bulletin (2016–19), a peer-reviewed journal established in 1958. He serves on the board of directors for the Near East Archaeological Society and as the president of the Evangelical Theological Society's eastern region. Dr. Hassler earned his academic degrees at Montana Bible College (BA) and The Master's Seminary (PhD, ThM, and MDiv). Read more....
